The (Not So) Simple Path to Immigration
It’s no mystery that U.S. immigration law can be quite complex and confusing.
There are an estimated 10.8 million undocumented immigrants currently in the U.S. who either entered unlawfully or, after entering lawfully on a temporary visa, overstayed. Why don’t they just come the legal way?
Good question. In order to answer this, we really have to understand both a bit about our country’s history and something of current U.S. immigration law.
With the fate of President Obama’s immigration actions now in the hands of the Supreme Court –– actions aimed at allowing millions of undocumented immigrants to apply for programs that could make them eligible for work authorization and associated benefits –– what will the future look like for those millions awaiting permanent residence in America?
Should the Court move forward with approval of these initiatives, considered by many a centerpiece of the President’s second term, the future may reveal itself sooner than we think.
